City worker gives up his high-flying job to make a healthier alternative to Nutella

A former city worker gave up his hefty salary to make healthy treats after he was so shocked one jar of Nutella contained 57 sugar cubes.
Kevin Bath, who worked in a number of city banks, as well as the London Stock Exchange, was so appalled when he found out how much sugar was in the spread his two youngest children loved that he decided to do something about it.
The 48-year-old and his wife Kellie, 45, from Halstead, in Essex, are now the forces behind Jim Jams, which is making waves in the healthier food and drink world.
Their chocolate spread contains just a small fraction of the sugar in Nutella, while their jams are made up of 35 per cent sugar, just under half the usual concentration in bulk-made jams.
Their jam also contains 60 per cent fruit, almost double the levels in other well-known jam brands.

Mr Bath said: "My two youngest children both absolutely loved Nutella and we as a family, I think like many others, were looking at cutting our sugar consumption.
"I was shocked at the amount of sugar in Nutella, so I thought it's time to come up with an alternative.
"And when we started looking, we found jams are typically 60 per cent sugar and 35 per cent fruit, so I thought 'there must be a way to turn that around'.
"Leaving work in June last year was a big leap of faith.
"I was used to having money - not being flush or anything - but being able to go out for dinner and go on holiday and that pretty much changed overnight."
Mr Bath, who began his career in the Royal Navy, added: "The fact is Nutella sales were going through the roof and when we looked at it, it contained 57 sugar cubes.
"The Cadbury's alternative was exactly the same amount of sugar and the own brands from Tesco and Asda were worse.

"Even with the Weight Watchers alternative, you're still talking more than 50 per cent sugar.
"When we looked around for healthier alternatives, nothing really stood out, so we thought 'here's a gap in the market'.

"Our chocolate spread has 83 per cent less sugar than others."
The dad-of-five, including Nutella lovers Evie, nine, and Jack, five, added: "We had amazing feedback initially from some pretty important people in the food and drink industry."
Their jams and spreads have also won a coveted Great Taste Award.

But the voyage hasn't all been plain sailing for the pair.
"We were both close to packing it in," added Mr Bath.
"We were running out of money and I was thinking 'I've got a family and I need to pay the mortgage'."
The pair's luck changed when Mr Bath was picked from 400 other entrants to win a substantial "growth" investment.
"I suppose we just kept the faith in the end," added Mr Bath.
"It doesn't mean we're sorted by any means.
"I was used to having money and being able to go on holiday in the summer.
"This summer, we're telling the children we're going on holiday in the back garden."

Their products are available in a number of stores around Essex and Suffolk, including the farm shop owned by pal of celeb chef Jamie Oliver, Jimmy Doherty, and Ocado.
Co-op stores across nearby Chelmsford also stock the products.

But Mr Bath, who said he "doesn't regret leaving the city at all", revealed he is in talks with major supermarkets about getting the products on their shelves.
As well as that, he is also hoping to secure contracts to have their foil-peel sachets in schools which are trying to make their pupils diets healthier.
At the moment, the spreads and jams are being made in Belgium and retail on the shelves at £2.70 per jar.

Nichol Naranjo, the blogger behind this ingenious idea, says she loves bringing nature into her home whenever she can. She's always pulling her car over on the side of the road to pick up fallen branches she thinks might work for upcoming projects. For this particular DIY, Nichol found branches in her mother's yard, which is full of cottonwood and Chinese elm trees. So the first step is free. Don't you love that?
Next, she washed the branches with a garden hose and sprayed them with an organic pesticide. They were left outside to dry for a few days before they were ready to hang. Then she found the perfect curtains—a pair of thin, white sheers for $15 on Amazon. Nichol's sheers are currently sold out, but you can find similar ones here. Finally, she went in search of the right hardware to hold her branches up. Going for a rustic look, she chose these $13 black curtain holdbacks.

Because the tree limbs were too big to slip into the curtain's rod pocket, the last step for Nichol was stapling the curtains to the back of the branches. She made sure to fold the curtains here and there to create a pleated look. Keep in mind, this window treatment is more about looking amazing and less about being functional. But if you're into it, you can definitely pull this project off.

There's also Hidden Falls with nearly seven miles of trails and a scenic waterfall. If you're looking to get out of town, Interstate and Afton State Parks have great hikes along the St. Croix River and are roughly one hour away. The trails are also open year-round, offering cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. Shop 'til you drop at the country's largest mall
Bloomington Make fun of it all you want (and we do) but where else can you find five roller coasters, four Caribous, a million-gallon aquarium, and a place to get married all under one roof? The people-watching alone is reason enough to make the trip, plus the opportunity to visit stores which have just this one location in Minnesota. Cost: Free, plus purchases

West Seventh, North Loop, Prospect Park If you can't quite decide what you want to eat, or want to satisfy a group with diverse tastes, a food hall is a fantastic bet. One of the first on the scene was Keg and Case Market in the West Seventh area of St. Paul, featuring vendors like O'Cheeze, Five Watt Coffee, and Clutch Brewing Co. There's also Graze Provisions + Libations in the North Loop with Soul Bowl and B.A.D Wingz and—of course—the new Market at Malcolm Yards getting all the buzz in Prospect Park with Wrecktangle Pizza and Bebe Zito. Metro-wide Minnesotans love a good beer—and it seems like a cool brewery has sprung up in nearly every neighborhood in the Twin Cities. Sisyphus Brewing near downtown Minneapolis also has comedy nights, including amateur hours, that are a riot along with great beer. Take your pup to a dog park-slash-brewery
Glenwood If you're a dog owner, or just a dog person, you'll be in heaven at Unleashed Hounds & Hops. The first off-leash indoor dog park/brewery in the Twin Cities, when COVID hit they also added a 6,000 square foot outdoor patio. On top of that, you can sip local suds like Lake Monster, Summit and Castle Danger as you watch Rover romp. Be sure to register your dog beforehand, which includes uploading their vaccination records. Reservations are encouraged, but not required. Cost: $8 daily pass for dogs, cost of beer for humans
Walk around a popular waterfall
Minnehaha One of the most picturesque spots to visit in the Twin Cities any time of the year is Minnehaha Falls. The 50-foot cascade is beautiful in the spring and summer when the water is flowing fast, but equally gorgeous in the winter when the falls freeze over. You can view the rapids from the top of the park or descend the stairs to the base to snap a winning selfie. There's also a network of trails along Minnehaha Creek, including the popular two-mile trek to where it meets the mighty Mississippi. Cost: Free

Powderhorn, Nokomis The Minnesota-famous Jucy (or Juicy, depending on where you go) Lucy burger wowed celebrities like Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake during the Minneapolis Super Bowl and it still blows us away, too. Although there are many trendy restaurants that do a solid modernization, the originals can be found at Matt's Bar (Jucy) and The 5-8 Club (Juicy.) It's long been debated who has the better burger—and the correct spelling—so you might just have to try both and decide for yourself. Cost: $9 - $12
